Why it matters

Wildpool started with a familiar post-swim problem. Founder Sami Robertson, an endurance swimmer and lifelong wild swimming enthusiast whose open-water swims include the English Channel, Lake Zurich, the Strait of Gibraltar and Robben Island, found there was no ideal shoe for climbing out over rocks on wet feet and then carrying on with the rest of the day. The London brand's answer is a slip-on intended to cover wild swimming, muddy trails and everyday settings, built around the idea that you shouldn't need to swap shoes after a swim.

Waterproof, but made to drain

According to the maker, many waterproof shoes trap water and grit, start to smell after a few wears and feel out of place off the trail. Wildpool aims to keep water out while also using what the maker calls a quick-dry structure, so any water that does get in can drain and evaporate. The upper and midsole use water-repellent materials, which the maker says resolves the tension between waterproofing and fast drying.

Comfort and fit

The maker highlights an insole informed by orthopaedic expertise, intended to support foot alignment and absorb impact when walking or running. The midsole and upper are said to have been tension-tested to withstand 25kg of force. Elastic laces replace conventional tying, allowing the shoe to be pulled on with wet hands; the maker says they also hold the foot securely and adapt to slight swelling over long days on foot.

  • Non-slip outsole with a tread pattern designed to grip wet rock, slick pavement and mud while shedding debris
  • Odour-resistant EVA material that the maker says inhibits bacterial growth and keeps weight down
  • Simple silhouette offered in multiple colours, intended to suit casual and smart-casual outfits
  • Circular design, with a planned return scheme to grind down used pairs into material for new Wildpool shoes

Designed for a second life

Sustainability is framed around longevity and recycling. The maker links the durability of the upper and midsole to a longer product life, and describes the take-back programme as planned rather than operating, so details of how it will work remain to be seen.
