ZERO MK2

A 4mm-thin, card-sized aluminium pen that folds out into a 14cm writing instrument via magnetic joints.

Editor’s view

Why it matters

Pens rarely top the list of things worth carrying, yet quick notes, sketches and signatures turn up constantly. ZERO MK2 approaches the problem by making the pen as easy to carry as a credit card. The maker describes it as the only pen in the world that transforms from card size to full size.

From card to pen

According to the maker, the pen measures just 4mm thick when stowed and becomes a 14cm pen in use. The change relies on a combination of magnetic joints and a folding structure: magnets hold each part in place, which the maker says keeps assembly and transformation smooth and stable. Folded, it lies flat; unfolded, it takes a shape intended to be easy to grip.

The body is made from aircraft-grade aluminium with a matte finish, which the maker says balances durability and light weight. The logo-free, flat design is meant to slip into a wallet card slot, phone pouch or card case. Based on product images, it appears in black and silver. An optional sleeve case is offered for protection against scratches.

Refills and revisions

ZERO MK2 accepts D1-standard refills, a widely available format, so users can choose their preferred ink brand and type. Compared with the first model, the maker lists these improvements:

  • Refined form and reduced weight
  • Improved assembly precision
  • Redesigned tip unit
  • Stronger connections between parts

The maker says these changes deliver a more natural writing feel and a more stable structure.
