Zythe

A wireless split keyboard with built-in magnetic tenting, dual OLED screens and ZMK firmware.

Why it matters

Zythe takes its cues from open-source column-staggered keyboards, then adds the features those designs often leave to hobbyists. According to the maker, each half connects independently over Bluetooth 5.0, carries its own long-life lithium-ion battery, and gets an OLED display and RGB underglow. The pitch is aimed at programmers dealing with repetitive strain injury (RSI), gamers who want precise input, and anyone who wants fewer cables on the desk.

Layout and tenting

The board has 58 keys in what the maker calls a "weak column stagger": a reduced column offset intended to shorten finger travel. Each half gets four thumb keys arranged in a curved cluster that follows the thumb's natural arc. The maker cites its own data suggesting the layout can raise typing speed, reduce errors and improve productivity by up to 20%. That figure is the maker's claim and has not been independently verified.

Tenting is built into the chassis. Attaching magnetic risers lets each half sit at 5°, 10°, 15° or 20°, which the maker says helps prevent ulnar deviation and keeps the hands in a neutral position. No separate tenting accessory or assembly is required.

Screens, knobs and lighting

An OLED screen on each half shows battery level for both halves, typing speed in WPM and the active layer. Users can also load custom animations. Optional rotary encoders, one per half, can be mapped to volume, scrolling or app-specific functions such as brush size in Photoshop. RGB underglow is adjustable through ZMK, with effects including breathing, wave and reactive modes. Colour can also be tied to the active layer.

Customisation and build

  • Normal-profile and low-profile versions
  • Hot-swap sockets for Gateron MX switches and Kailh Choc V2 switches (low profile), each offered in clicky, linear and tactile variants
  • Double-shot PBT side-shine-through keycaps in OEM profile (normal) or a dedicated low-profile design; MX-stem keycaps such as SA or DSA can be fitted
  • English legends as standard, with an option for second-language legends printed on the top of the keycaps
  • ZMK-based key mapper plus a custom-GUI web app for macros, layers, encoder and lighting settings without coding
  • Gaming mode over wired USB-C for faster response, with an optional Windows key lock
  • Each half CNC-machined from a single piece of recycled aluminium alloy

Taken together, Zythe's appeal lies in bundling features that DIY split boards usually require users to source or build themselves, including tenting, displays, wireless halves and a GUI configurator. How well the finished hardware delivers on these claims remains to be seen.
