HubKey Gen2

Port-starved laptops and repetitive keyboard work are the two problems HubKey Gen2 sets out to address. The maker describes it as an "11-in-1 multi-hub" that also carries five fully customizable keys and one knob, so the same device that connects monitors and drives can trigger shortcuts.

According to the team, the second generation reflects a year of feedback from backers of the previous model, with the most requested changes being stronger display support and more customizable controls. It is described as plug-and-play on Windows, macOS, Linux and Steam Deck.

Programmable controls

Through the official driver, the maker says users can choose from 170 preset combinations or record sequences of up to four consecutive key operations per key. The campaign's examples include a designer mapping a layer switch, save and export to a single press, or a writer combining text selection, copy and a new document.

Ports and connectivity

• Two HDMI ports, each rated for 4K at 60Hz, with extended and mirrored modes on Windows and macOS
• Dedicated Type-C PD port with up to 100W charging
• Two USB-A 3.1 ports and one USB-C 3.1 port, up to 10Gbps
• Simultaneous SD and TF card reading, up to 480Mbps
• 2.5Gbps RJ45 Ethernet
• 3.5mm audio jack

The maker illustrates the data speed with a 10GB video file: roughly 3 minutes over USB 2.0 (480Mbps) versus about 10 seconds via HubKey Gen2, a figure that would depend on the connected drive.

Design

The housing is aluminum alloy, which the maker says improves durability and drop resistance. A built-in neon LED light with adjustable brightness and color helps locate the hub on a dark desk and adds some visual flair.
